South Coast Architectural Services

A high proportion of the population located within the South-coast are over sixty. Some of which have difficulty with their mobility which can affect their independence and quality of life. We were contacted by a retired couple to provide a feasibility study on their home. The brief was to provide a secure structure for a mobility scooter accessed from the front of the house, increasing the ground floor footprint to accommodate:
• Two en-suite shower rooms
• Lounge extension
• Front Porch

Maintaining the Architectural integrity of the front facade was especially important. A new dummy pitched roof cut into the existing main roof on both the front and side elevations would ensure street scene integrity. On the rear elevation the proposed lounge extension would have a flat roof to marry with the existing kitchen roof

Within the rear extension, floor to ceiling windows and French doors were provided to give a glazed curtain walling effect to the rear aspect. The separating wall was opened up to provide an arch between the existing kitchen and lounge. By doing this greater circulation space was achieved

Both shower rooms came directly off the bedrooms, low profile shower trays were provided for easy access. Tiling full height on the walls with contrasting non-slip floor tiles to both en suites. Light and ventilation provided by windows which matched the existing windows

The mobility scooter room was accessed from the main drive with a level threshold. The door was non-standard 1200mm in width to provide easy access for the scooter, power sockets were also provided for charging
